Just bought a new 99 CLK 430. Is the "ultimate" extended warranty package worth the $2200 ? I plan to keep the car for 10+ yrs. I will not put many miles on it; 8,000/year +/-.

Extended warranties are worthwhile if you plan to keep the car. You don't have to buy it now but, be sure to get it before your factory warranty expires. I have had great luck with Warrantech but, you will find that MB dealers routinely mark up the price. $2,200 sounds a little steep. Find a good independent who sells the same Warrantech package for less.

I did not know you could purchase these extended warranties from Independents. What kinds of places sell them? Are they independent garages or chains like Goodyear? Which ones do you recommend and what is a suggested target price for coverage?

I purchased my Warrantech extended warranty from an independent garage that sells/services used Mercedes. I priced the exact same Warrantech warranty at the local MB dealership and it was 30% more expensive. I can still take the car almost anywhere to have it serviced including the MB dealership.

Warrantech will not deal directly with the public and has refused to tell me who offers their warranties. I called their 1-800-328-2655 today and spoke with customer service. Basically they said to call "all of the dealerships and garages in your area" to find out who offers Warrantech. Thankfully, their claims payment is much simpler!

Could you tell us the name and phone number of the company that sold you the Warrentach administered warrant? These can be sold over the phone.

I bought my Warrantech warranty at MBS Motors in Duluth, GA. (See our Featured Shops Page). I doubt they can sell over the phone but, if you're up for a trip to Atlanta...

My advice would be for you to call several places in your area that service MB's and ask if they sell Warrantech warranties. You don't have to take the car to be serviced where you bought the warranty.

Unfortunately the only shops in my area (Tucson, AZ) that service MB exclusively besides the single dealer, doesn't sell or even recommend extended warranties. This is what I get for moving to the world's biggest hick town. :-)
