1986 300e Tranny!!!!!!!!!
I just purchased a Black 1986 300E at the local auction ($250). The car started with no problems however when I tried to move it there was no response. I checked the auto tranny fluid and found that it was missing about 5 qt and the color of the fluid was brown/black. I added 5qt of new tranny fluid and the car moved however only in first gear and reverse. It will not shift to second, third and fourth. Should I bother flushing the gearbox and adding new fluid ($100 localy) or simply find a used gearbox (about $600)? I hope you guys can help me.
Thanks, Igor.

I think you are on a roll. If it were me I would not only drain the trans of ATF but also the torque converter. I would then drop the trans pan and get a genuine MBZ trans filter and gasket. Install them. Pour in some TransX or something like that along with the rest of the ATF. See whats left! Some people would not doubt disagree with me, but I often find some Benzes are actually ok, just need some TLC. It will cost you a lot less than the $100 or the $600. If this works then go to the trans flush. Keep us posted! Haasman
