My '87 300E has a soft 2-3 shift (I know it starts in second). It has been like this for 3yrs and 50,000km. Is there any modifications that can be done to the valve body or does it need a band adjust or clutch replacement or a complete rebuild?

Wow! Looks like you have many miles on this sled! I would think that if it is one shift in particular, the tranny needs to be taken apart.
