Accelerator pedal too hard

The accelerator pedal on the 92 190E 2.6 is a little too hard to depress. I've compared it with other similiar models as well as 300E and it seems to require almost double the force to press it.

I've lubed the cable, and put wd40 after taking the air filter away from the top of the mechanics that the accelerator cable attaches to. It helped a little but still not as soft as others.

Any ideas ?
thanks.

Best way to check is to disconnect it from the fire wall and try the linkage from there out if it is easier check the accelerator to fire wall connection. Keep doing this until you find the part that sticks. Some benzes have a bushing on the firewall connection that can cause this. Good luck hope it helps.

Hi,

Check the pedal itself.

I just replaced mine (300E) and the part that connects to the linkage was broken. Pedal effort was twice as hard.

$28 at the MB dealer to replace. Works like a charm and took five minutes to change. Had to pull the carpet to get to the pin at the bottom of the pedal.

Good luck,

I agree with chicago124 I have had several 123 cars where this ended up being the probem. Easy to replace.

Gentlemen,
thanks for the replies. Now I'm not sure about the location of the part that's being referred to as broken that connects to the linkage.
Perhaps a picture might help
as for the 190E 2.6 could someone tell me what the part # is because the parts dept at the dealer is always clueless !

The actual gas pedal. Take the carpet and rugs out of the driver's footwell. The gas pedal is held-in at the bottom by pin at the bottom. Take it out and check the back and also its hinge flex. Often this is where the problem is.

If not, it helps to view up into the gas pedal linkage and pivot.

Haasman,
I actually replaced the gas pedal last week. But that didn't help a whole lot. I've noticed that the cable ultimately has to pull on the springs in the mechanism right under the air filter.
I had the dealer check all those parts out and even the cable portion that ends up in the transmission. They all checked out fine. But still too hard to push the pedal !

If the pedal is good I'd suspect the linkage. Are you handy? can you take of the air cleaner and lube the throttle linkage? Try moving the linkage by hand. I would avoid a silicone based product since some say it can get sucked into the air intake and ruin your O2 sensor.

While you are there, gently wipe the air mass sensor with a clean soft cloth, it helps.

Allright,
degreased, cleaned and lubed the throttle linkage.
A little better but still quite hard to press. One thing I've noticed is that while trying to move the linkage by hand, the linkage seems to be the part that's hard to move. When the accelerator cable is free it poses no resistance.
Now, I'm wondering if the linkage part can be replaced. How expensive will it turn out to be ?

Diagnosing a bad booster...

1980 300D
The booster's seemed lame since I got her. The vacuum system isn't flawless, but it's pretty good. CC works, locks, ACC is a little wonky, car shuts down, etc... The EGR vacuum line is hanging free, by trial and error I found that state to be the best setting for the transmission (shifts like I think it should) but that's a leak... when it's plugged, though the brakes aren't better... Is there a check valve that might be faulty? How do I diagnose the booster? Thanks a ton!
