Transmission not shifting into final gear

Help,

The transmission on our '88 190e I don't believe is shifting into 4th gear. I assume it's a 4 speed. When the rpms' are at 3k, the car is doing 63 on a flat stretch of road. Seems awfully high to me. Is there something I can check that would prevent it from shifting or is there something that wears other than the synchros?

Thanks,

Kodiak

I think that is the correct RPM for the speed. Yes you do have a four speed trans, but it starts out in second, not first, so your shift count is right.

To have it start out in first, from a standing start, mash the gas pedal and you will feel and notice the transmission "dropping down" a gear and a sudden surge of acceleration.

This arrangement is for economy.

really? Can anyone else concur with this? It just seems to be revving awfully high for that speed.
Thanks,

See this thread

More RPMs and MPHs

I just went out and did a MPH vs RPM check, these are what I got for the '87 190E 2.3 automatic with standard recommended tire size:

MPH---RPM
60-----2,800
65-----3,100
70-----3,300
75-----3,450

Needless to say, these are approximate.
