Steering wheel movement on C280

My 1997 C280 has some steering wheel play. It seems that the telescoping wheel doesn't lock correctly and it pops up when you pull on it. There is about 1-2" of free play. My problem is this, I took it to the dealer for diagnosis and they said that the car needs a new steering column plus 4.8 hours labor, total: $900! Anyone experience this before, and is there any other fix?
