turbo oil drain
 

I have a question regarding the position of the bottom turbo oil drain tube that goes in the oil pan. I have searched on this topic and found no details on my inquiry. I replaced my two o-rings, the upper gasket, and the oil pan grommet. Does the lower tube rest towards the top or bottom postition when it is installed? There is about an inch or less of travel that this can move. The reason that I am asking is that it is still seeping some, though not as bad before I replaced it. The last time I did one was about 10 years ago, and cannot remember. The CD rom manual does not elaborate...it just says to insert the tube with o-ring into the bottom grommet in the oil pan. Of course we all know just how much fun this job is.....:rolleyes:

It is an amazing job to do .... everyone has war stories about doing this. I have done several.

The last one I finally used a grinder (OK bad mechanic) and created a little cut-away to have the one tube be able to clear the other.

Regarding your question: "Does the lower tube rest towards the top or bottom postition when it is installed?" As I recall, the lower tube rests towards the block, the upper is coming fromt he turbo.

I think you're asking how far (in it's upwards/downwards leeway) does it cram into the lower grommet? It's really tricky, but best explained here:http://business.baylor.edu/Richard_Easley/autofaqs/tseals.htm


I've done it several ways and mine still "seeps" a bit.

Thank you for the advice. I did it as described in the article linked on jbaj007's reply, except without the RTV sealer. I lightly lubed the o-rings and grommet with oil so they would slide in place without trouble. I guess I should have used sealer instead. I can live with it for now. Sometimes it seeps just enough to be annoying. Other times it is dry. :mad: I did pull the lower pan and replace the gasket also. I also replaced the o-ring from the air filter housing drain tube while I was down there. It's just frustrating to spend the time to do something right and the engine sort-of thumbs its nose at you:p
