Is This Steering Play Normal?

If the wheels are straight, the steering play is just right.

But if the wheels are pointed either to the left or right, there is too much play (3/4 inch play). I measure this while the car is stationary. I have NO problems with high speed vibrations.

I'm not sure if the play comes from the tires. My tires are worn more on the outer edges. But they still have tire tread.

Steering box and P/S fluid (full) haven't been touched in 38.7K miles.

Is this steering play normal? Or what could be the problem?
And where is the steering box?

This is normal. With the recirculating ball setup, there will be more play when the wheels are turned. Adjustments to the box should only be attempted based on the play when the wheels are straight.

Thanks for the advice.
