Replacing Motor Mounts??

I'm getting ready to replace my engine and trans mounts. Can I lift the engine using a good floor jack or do I have to use an engine lift? Where would I place the jack? Certainly not under the oil pan?!?!?!

You don't need to lift it much. Put a board between the jack and the oil pan and lift it that way. Do one side at a time.

Bottle jacks are nice - they take up less room and make maneuvering underneath the car easier. Use a board in between the tip of the jack and the oil pan.

As was previously stated, you do not need to jack up the engine much, just support it.

You may want to loosen the fan cowl.

It will give you more room.
The driver's side is more difficult but, "doable".

I dunno about that - the first time I tried to do mounts, it took me a week to get the driver's side out, and I almost stripped an allen bolt in the process. The second time, I just gave the car to the mechanic after three days of trying, then losing (and, thankfully, recovering..!) a bottom bolt in the front crossmember!

hehehehe, I dropped both of them. I think that is the reason there are those holes in the crossmember, that's where I fished them out of.

Ok guys, ...so how do I replace them without dropping the bolts down into the crossmember??

On mine, the holes in the bottom aren't big enough for the bolt+washer to fit (!). Ended up having to push them back to the top hole with a wire coathanger, but not before I got a load of profanity off my mind. :)

Just make sure the bolt stays on the allen head/socket as you're pulling it out from the crossmember. I made the mistake of removing the socket and trying to unscrew it with my fingers, whereupon I promptly fumbled it into the crossmember. If you do lose it down there, fish around to get it towards one of the drain holes. If it doesn't fit through, wrap a stiff wire around the bolt head and push it back to the top hole.

I had no trouble with the bolts dropping on our 190E. I used an allen end for a 1/2" socket set, a 6" extension, and a long breaker handle. The bolts loosened easily, and stayed captive on the allen head as I spun them the rest of the way out with the extension.

The hairy one was the upper hex head bolt on the mount - driver's side. No way to get any torque on that until I removed the FI system from the manifold and used a looong extension. Ease may vary with other models.

On both of mine, I got sloppy. The bolt was sitting nicely on the hex socket, but I bumped to rim of the access hole knocking the bolt off. D'OH!
