turbo rebuild
 

I've gone through the searches and found at least 2 good sources for turbo parts but still nothing on repair instructions - any special tools like pullers to disassemble, tolerances for axial and radial play, other clearances etc. Any ideas?:confused:

Which turbocharger are you working with? Also, the model number of the turbo or the vehicle it is fitted to would be helpful.

The car is an 84' 300TD and the make of the turbo is Garrett. I have found an article written on rebuilding turbochargers at:

but this is not specific to the Garrett turbo I own. The two things I am most concerned about are:

1. Balancing the turbo
2. Cleaning out the turbo good enough with common tools.

Please share any experience here.

That is good information; I followed it last year when I rebuilt my turbo. I did not have to worry about balancing because I did not replace any center pieces. I also made sure that I indexed the impeller to the nut. Torque everything to specifications, line up index marks, and you should have no problems.

My turbo had a nut securing the compressor fan to the shaft. I beleive his documentation points out specifics about balancing.

You won't need to balance if you keep all rotating parts in the same relationship, and if it is really bad, you will need a cartridge anyway (rotating parts and bearing housing).

End housing removal is just bolts, make sure you get them back into the factory configuration (i.e. get the output from the compressor pointed at the intake manifold).

What parts did you need to replace when you rebuilt the turbo? They sell rebuild kits at turbocity for about $100, this would replace all of the bearings, seals, clips,etc. It is also possible to buy the bearrings and seals seperately and replace only what is necessary. I have not opened up the turbo yet so I don't know what to replace. Is it best to just replace everything here or is that an overkill?

The problem this turbo has is oil leaking into the exhaust side and coming out the exhaust pipe in liquid and smoke form. The shaft spins freely but has about 1/8" of up/down play.

Is the exhaust housing or compressor wheel damaged? If so you will need to consider locating a remanufactured unit.

If not follow the instructins from the web-site, stick with the rebuild kit from turbo-city, and you will do just fine.

If it's leaking oil badly, you need to check the condition of the bearing housing. If the bearing is bad enough to allow considerable sideways movement of the shaft, chances are the housing is buggered too, so new bearings won't help much. If in doubt, get the cartridge.
