...on a 1989 300TE.

This sounds like a silly question, but I need to know how to check the power steering fluid level. I know how to open the reservoir and look inside, but what am I looking for? How do I check it? car warm? cold? What is the proper fuild level? Can I use ATF Dexron fluid?
