Question Opinions on first gear shift kit...

Just wondering what you techs thought about this. It seems like a very inexpensive way to get some more power off the line.

Do you guys think this is possible for a DIY to install? Or does this have to go to a shop. Will this mess anything up?

A lot of guys have bought this from Bergwerks. They are a first class shop.

JimF installed it in his '95 S500 coupe. Same engine as your car, I believe.

Many guys with 500E's have also installed it.

Try posting on the hot rod forum.

I have a kit as well in my W126.

I also bought the one touch windows, head light relay upgrade, H&R springs, and H&R spacers from them.

They are very knowledgable, if you have a W126 check out www.mbcoupes.com.

If you want to start in first gear for a number of intersections moving the lever down each time gets old quite quickly. For the cost of the first gear start kit it is well worth getting.

I have wired mine into the E/S switch that my Euro has on the shifter console. The trans defaults to S when the switch is unplugged so I rewired it to operate the first gear start option.

The first gear start kit also has a number of options such as a selectable speed for the up/downshift points, central lock activation at a certain speed, summer/winter option which makes the kit quite versatile.

Check the thread about 380SLs and first gear starts on the SL forum; the actual topic is the Bergwerks unit.

Thanks guys, I am definitely ordering this kit with the sport package. How is installation? Good for a DIY? I can install a stereo, etc, so am hoping this wont be too much more difficult.

Also whats the opinions on engine/tranny wear and tear? Does running it in first gear more often affect this, as well as gas consumption?

I did the install myself. It comes with good instructions. You will need to remove the carpet and floor panel in the passenger area, also the centre console wood trim if you are wiring it to an E/S switch. Mine is mounted underneath the stereo.

Thumbs up

I installed the module recently in my 500E in about 6 to 7 hours, this included the E/S switch assembly. It is a first class product from a first class company, cannot recommend them enough ! Superb . . .

The first gear start actually improves transmissions life. Stu Ritter has written about this in the Star Magazine. It is more of a burden to start a car in second gear than in first.
