If I jiggle shift lever in park the car will start. The backup lights do go on when I put the ignition on and put lever in R. Am I on the right track? If so what to do?

Put it in neutral and try to crank. If it does every time, you have found the problem. Have the neutral switch replaced. IF not the starter could be on the blink.
