My airco is leaking inside the car and therefore I will have to remove the complete dashboard. Anyone who can give tips or recommend sites where I could find useful info.

This is an advanced procedure that you should think about before entering into lightly. There are several, many, and alot of wires back there not to mention the vacuum lines. I have done several evap. cores on the 124 and it still amazes me how they are put together. My first one took about 3 days, now I can do one in 7 hours.

Thanks. Since you are familiar with the procedure, could you give me some tips (order of dismantling etc.). For me it is the first time and I would like to shorten the time from 3 days.

Walter,
Recently I've had the misfortune to have to have the AC evap replaced in my 92 300SE and did a lot of research before doing so. Included was using a leak stop product which slowed it down but kept returning worse until I had to bite the bullet. I've put a 5.0 into a 190 but would not even think of doing the evap after I saw pictures of a 300E with its dash apart, and the factory time is roughly 14 hours. On my S class it is 21.8 hours. If you feel good about it go ahead but a strong warning: as you get the dash apart and are ready to pull the heat/ac unit out there is a tube which runs from doorpost to doorpost. When you remove this crosstube, do NOT, DO NOT, open a door because if you do there is a good possibility you will crack the windshield. The tube is a designed structual member of the chassis and an open door will stress the windshield frame and because the glass is glued in, it will crack. The local dealer here cracked a few before learning!! Just a fair warning which is probably not in books! Good luck with the evap. TobiasMB 300SE, 300CE, 190/5.0 |
Are there any books or CD-roms available, which describe the procedure and how to obtain them ?

Hello,
I do not know of a description of how to replace the evap. core on paper. I did my first using the fly by wire method. I just started and stopped until I was done. If you are doing it to save money, you are not saving money, but wasting time. If you are doing it for a learning experience, I commend you! Good luck and take your time (and some digital pics to reference) and you will have fun. ------------------ Benzmac: 1981 280GE SWB 1987 16V ASE CERTIFIED MASTER AUTO TECHNICIAN SERVICE MANAGER FOR 14 BAY FACILITY MERCEDES SPECIALIST 8 YRS PARTNER IN MERCEDESSHOP.COM |

I am not sure if the gass 124's are the same as the diesel 124's, but if they are, there are several good posts on this from teh diesel forum. I posted some info on this a year or so ago and used a couple other posts as reference as well when I did mine. All in all it isn't that bad of a job. I did my first one in about 20 hours total. The worst part was removing the whole "box" from the firewall. I don't know what kind of adhesive they use, but it is some good stuff.
