Poll: What are you paying for gas??
Here in Central NJ: (All full serve by law)
Regular (87 Octane) = 1.55 - 1.60 / gal Plus (89 Octane) = 1.63 - 1.69 / gal Super (93 Octane) = 1.71 - 1.80 / gal There are some oddballs - Getty has 92 Octane Super and usually is about 5 cents cheaper down the line. And then of course there is Ammoco with their ultra 94 Octane that is over 1.80. In Queens NYC: (fiancee's house - self serve) Regular (87 Octane) = 1.79 - 1.85 / gal Plus (89 Octane) = 1.88 - 1.93 / gal Super (93 Octane) = 1.95 - 2.05 / gal It keeps creeping up, and im afraid soon the 2 as the first digit will become all too common in these parts. To think, 3 years ago we were in the .79 - .85 cent for regular, and barely broke a dollar for super. Take care, George - e-mail = george@parts4sale.com |

I'm paying whatever they're charging.
I know that you guys aren't whining and complaining -- but I sure am getting tired of those that are. Of course I don't like paying $1.70 for gas. But you know what? Adjusted for inflation, the price of gas in 1990 would have been $2.50. Seriously, we basically have 10 years in which the price of gas hasn't really gone up that much. The same people complaining will pay $1.40 for a 16oz bottle of water or $3.50 for a Starbucks. Just imagine what a gallon of vanilla extract would cost! |
Actually, what's interesting to me is that the Euro version of my car--the 107 500SL--sold as well as it did, getting 14-17 mpg or so as it did with gas in Europe going $3-4/gallon at the time!

San Francisco has the highest fuel prices in California:

See the key is the dramatic price swings...
See, most people generally accept inflation as a fact of life. However, it doesn't really phase people because its a gradual rise in price, usually accomanied or at least somewhat offset by a cost of living increase / raise, built into most pay structures, either through collective bargaining or corporate policy.
The problem with gasoline, and energy prices in general is their volatility, not their average cost. People have become used to the lower end of the spectrum, and exibit outrage at the higher end of the spectrum. When the price of gas rises 50 cents / gal in 3 months - people flip. Especially those who consume large amounts of it. The airlines, and over the road trucking industries are really taking a beating again. About a year ago they would stage "protests" by driving across interstates in all lanes at well below the speed limit to express the outrage at the price. Guess its the american way... People think they can solve all their problems by complaining. George - |

brookspw,
Funny you should mention complaining about the price. I'm not, I mean you gotta have it, but I did ask the filling station owner the other day how he could justify knocking the price up 3-4 cents in between tanker trucks. The way I put it was " the price was X amount two hours ago, now it's up by X and you haven't had today's delivery yet, what gives"? The reply was "corporate office". That same afternoon my 14 year old son asked me as we passed the filling station "$2.05 (refering to hi-test), that's stupid, do you think anyone really pays that much"? I told, yep I do, because that's what this car takes. He continued asking about the price, etc and my reply was that I have no room to complain, and that there are people I know in other parts of the world paying $4+ a gallon. I response, I take off a little gentler from stop lights, build my speed slowly but still drive at a comfortable 75-80. It's not how fast you drive, but how you drive fast. |
Around here in Daytona the going rate seems to be around

Premium unleaded here is about 90 cents per litre, which is $3.43 per US gallon.

Atlanta
The prices are as follows near my house in a southern suburb of Atlanta: 1. $1.49 for 87 2. $1.59 for 89 3. $1.69 for 93 All prices at a Chevron station this morning. We are usually very fortunate to have some of the cheapest fuel prices in the country here in Altanta. I really don't know why it's that way but it's very hard to complain about after I just read some of the prices you all are paying in other areas of the US and Canada. Dale |
93 octane is about a dime shy of $2.00/gal here in southern WI.
Apparently the state AG is checking into the recent price hikes, but I'm not sure why? Besides the threat of war, the colder than usual weather, Venezuelan oil workers' strikes and poltical turbulence in Nigeria have dramatically affected prices. I think oil is $37/barrel right now and probably will hit that magic $40/barrel. Hopefully after a "short" war, prices will plummet like they did in '91 -- down to $18/barrel! |
At Texaco in Texas...
Premium is between $1.71 - $1.74...depending on what day it is. I suspect is goes up on weekends and holidays. Higher fuel prices translates to less bottom line...this affects FedEx, where I work. So a much needed cost-of-living raise may not manifest itself at all this year... ...but the utility companies can whine about it and get rate hikes approved to transfer the costs to the consumer. Wish we could do that! "I'm raising my salary because my day care, utility and gas costs went up"... ;) |
In S. Texas it is as low as $1.47 for reg.
I have to agree with blackmercedes. We got ourselves into this bind not only with the cars we drive but with the politicians we elect. Bush was an a..hole when he lived in Texas and still is. He had the 2 compaanies he owned handed to him, neither company ever made a profit, his daddy arranged for them to be bought out by firends at outrageous prices and Shrub walked away with a fortune because of insider trading. The same insider trading that he is trying to nail Martha Stewart for. Tell me where the man ever learned about business. As we say here, "He is all hat and no herd". It takes more than just buying a pair of boots to fill them. |

who's complainin'?
i'm not complaining about high prices(although i must admit i don't like 'em!)up here the gas co's tell us 'that it's not their fault prices are so high-it's all the taxes they have built in to the price' and that they're only making about 2-3 cents/litre.i guess about 10 cents per gallon.i've heard of loss-leaders but i can't think of any other industry that runs their bussiness like this hoping i MIGHT buy a soda or bag of chips to help them turn a profit!

Hmm . . . a Hummer H1 has a 42 gal tank (no pun intended), the H2 has a 32 gal, the Maybach is 29 and the Ford Expedition is 26 . . so our CA (high taxes and specially formulated fuel) would be shelling out $96.60, $73.60, $66.70 and $59.80 to fill up?
|
Yeah but someone with a Maybach, doesnt worry about gas prices.
sixto, Santa Nella north of 152 on I5 has pretty cheap gas before you get going over to san jose if you wanted to know. Flagstaff, AZ Where I attend NAU Today jumped 87 1.799 89 1.899 91 1.999 Diesel #2 1.879 I wish I could get 93 octane. |
Seattle, WA:
87=1.89 89=1.99 91=2.09 There is cheaper gas here, but this is the Shell station that's the closest gas stop to where I live. -Sam |
If anyone has a BJ's wholesale club near them, check out their gas prices. Ours has unleaded 87 for $1.529 and premium 93 octane for $1.669. They don't sell plus, or diesel. Of course, at the end of November, their premium was $1.399... BJ's prices seem to be a good 10-12 cents a gallon below the next cheapest, albeit name brand, stations. The BJ's gas is their own "brand", although they are 87 and 93 octane, and my '91 TE seems just fine with it....
Diesel here is very close to $2 a gallon, with "premium diesel" (Texaco/Sunoco/Gulf) approaching $2.20. |

What does this have to do with gas prices? |
Here in Georgia (my part of Georgia anyway) prices have been around 1.70 - 1.75 (this is for premium, I don't burn anything else). I can go to a little store in Conyers (east of Atlanta) and pay 1.65 and it comes out of the same truck that just delivered to the store across the street.
Here is a little info for everyone who don't know this, the guy running the station/store does NOT set the price on the pump the gas company does. If he/she doesn't make the changes they simply come out and lock the pumps and essentially are out of the gas business. I learned this from a good friend who owned a small store until he retired and sold it. We really don't have much room to complain as I remember back in 1980 - '81 when stationed in Germany gas went for DM1.17 a litre. Given the exchange rate at the time gas was going for about $2.50 a gallon back then while we were paying a mere .90 cents for the same thing. I understand that they now are paying about $5.00 a gallon. |
