'96 W140s should have most of the problems out already. The only let down I can think of is that the cool parking guides are gone...

The only negative that I can think of is the "eletronic" 5-speed trans. While its has more usable gear ratios the "first" year for this trans was not the best(too many warranty claims). The engine fuel system was enhanced & was tied to Driver Auth. System.

Hm....right.....96s and 97s MBs seem to have alot of trouble with the 5-speed tranny. Even the E-Class with 5-speed has lots of trouble.
Also, some 96s have faulty A/C expansion valve...so, maybe look into that, too... ------------------
