Volvo question...
 

I know this is Mercedes Shop, but a lot of you seem to either own or have owned Volvos. My question is pertaining to a 1985 740 Turbo. It has stick shift and starting about 2 months ago the engine seems to bog down while turning. It doesn't matter what gear I am in, but if I am accelerating though a turn, the engine violently stalls, and then smooths out as soon as the wheel is straight. What could be causing this problem? The exhaust did break a month ago, and was poorly fixed by us, but it had been doing this before hand. Do you think this may be something wrong w/ the fuel system? Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Left turns or right turns or both. Sounds like a fuel problem. I assume fuel injection. Maybe a short in wiring causing fuel pump cut-out?

that's one of those years where Volvoes still had the system also sometimes used on BMWs and SAABs, in which there are two fuel pumps, one main pressure pump outside the tank, and another "pre-pump" (in SAAB vocabulary) in the tank, the second being there solely to deliver fuel to the main pump without the kinds of fluctuations which might be produced otherwise. On such cars, when the pre-pump dies, the car will run fine when it has more than half a tank of fuel, so that the main pump is supplied by siphoning action, but will die when the level in the tank drops low or when it all sloshed to one side in a corner.

This problem is much cussed and discussed at brickboard.com -- try shouting "Fy Fann!" at the car, too.

Start the engine, vehicle parked, and and turn steering wheel all the way left and right. If your engine bogs down, you have problem with your steering system or your engine( too week engine, could be a turbo problem) If it happens always when you drive you have problem with fuel delivery. Pull out in tank fuel pump and perform function test on both fuel pumps, inspect inlet tube for pin wholes, cracks exct. How many miles on your Volvo?

I agree with kjsabat.
The problem should be rubber tube for connecting the in tank pump to the surface. When it cracks it sucks air when turning. I had this on my Volvo 1982 240DL.
