rear subframe bushing question

On my never-ending list of things to do on my '84SD, The rear subframe bushings have come up. How do I know if they are worn? How much of an improvement in the ride will they make? Will they quiet some of the rumbling and the road noise.

As always, thanks for all input and ideas.

If they are loose allowing the subframe to "clunk" around they are bad. Also it would not be beyond the realm of possibility for them to collapse metal to metal.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Unless there is looseness, you are probably wasting your time replacing them. Simply raise the car safely and pry around on them to determine if they are loose.

Good luck,

Thank you much

Is there anything else in the rear suspension that could cause that clunking sound? I could equivelate the sound to the sound of bad guide rod joints.

There are any number of things that can cause a "clunk" including; differential mounts, subframe bushings, loose suspension links, u-joint, flex disk........

The best thing to do is get under and apply the "Three P's," Push, Pull, Pry and Prod. You will most likely find the problem that way.

Good luck,
