New Alternator

Hey

I just replaced my alternator on my 1994 C280. It's a rebuilt one by Bosch. Is it normal for it to hiss at the beginning, such as brushes getting broken in or should I return the alternator?

Thanks

Jonathan

Never actually "heard" an alternator make any noise during operation. Make sure it is the alternator doing so and not some other component...although bearings mounted improperly may contribute to the noise.

Also make sure it is installed correctly and aligned properly with the serpentine belt...any belt residue (dust particles) showing up on the alternator housing?

1994 C280 Altnernator Noise

Hi,

I have it aligned, and a I replaced the tensioner, and the other pulley. I'm sure it's the altenator because the noise is coming from that direction. Additionally, before installation of the alternator, I spun it and it seemed to grab on some places on the shaft.

I may just return it for another one.

Thanks for your reply.

Maybe your "rebuilt" is from my old "core" from two years ago... ;)

I bent the shaft a little trying to swap the pulley! :D

Anything is possible. How did you bend the shaft by replacing the pulley?

Thanks for the reply.

Didn't have an impact wrench and the pulley was bolted on TIGHT!

Vice-gripped the shaft for leverage as I torqued and twisted against the bolt...to no avail!:(

The resulting force against the shaft bent it a bit...

...ended up taking the unit to a local indie who used an impact wrench to unbolt the sucker...for free! :)
