Tranny problems Please Help!!!

Well 2 days ago my car started to shift down to second gear occasionally. I thought at that time it wasn't that big of a deal, but now the car will stay in second gear at all times. It will shift to 3rd and 4th every once in awhile, but mainly stays in 2nd. What could the problem be (Please-OH-Please don't tell me I need a new transmission)?
Thanks for any help.

How many miles on the car and when was the last trans. fluid change?

Check the basics first!

Check the level and the color/smell of the transmission fluid.

Snoopy, your 560 SEC has a switch on the shift lever to engage first gear. With the shifter in the "2" position, a simple click to the left? will toggle the switch. If this switch gets stuck ( and they do ), it can cause some strange behavior from the transmission. Before you assume the worst, have this checked. Good luck

Check the kickdown switch (under the accelerator pedal) to make sure it isn't stuck or shorted, and check control linkage at the fuel distributor. If the linkage (or cable, I don't know off the top of my head which on the 560) is disconnected, the tranny will "think" you are holding the accelerator all the way down and won't upshift.

If the linkage and switchs are all working, yes, refusal to upshift is indeed and indication of a seriously sick tranny. Sorry.
