Have a tapping noise.
1989 560 SEL. Finished putting a new cam shaft in around two weeks ago. Have been driving the car everyday since. Today, when I got home from work, I hear a nasty tapping noise. The noise sounds like the rockers. I checked the oil and it is clean and at a very good level. (it was about a half a quart low so I topped it off.)
Can anyone possibly shed some light on my situation? Respects, Andy |
rockers
Andy,
I take it you replaced the rockers as well not just the camshaft. If not I would recommend you do. m |
Yes, I replaced the rockers and the tower bearings. I also put new oiler ends on a very clean oil pipe. Used lots of MB assembly lube too.
Can it be that the rockers and cam have been broken in and that I need to shim the lifters more? Respects, Andy |
broken in
I am not sure it should break in. The system is self adjusting so they should always be adjusted correctly. Have you pulled the valve cover and had a look to make sure everything looks okay and the cam is getting oiled. It is messy but well worth it to check.
I assume you got the right came for your specific engine, MB cams vary based on the engine designation. I am sure you did but just checking. m |
Thanks for the reply. Yes, it is the correct cam. What is very puzzling about this is that i have put a couple of hundred miles on the car without a problem. I did just put a new cap and rotor in, but all that did was make the car easier to start.
Thanks all. |
please help
It would take a couple of hundred miles to do any damage to the cam. Have you pulled the valve cover to inspect it.

Will do either this evening or early int teh morning. The car is my daily driver, and it is 60 miles one way to work.
Thanks, Andy |
