The rear wiper works ok but the washer does not work I have checked the pump it is ok. I had the same problem on a 1983 123 series and it has repeated itself on an 89 124 series. Any ideas or shortcuts as to what the problem is - I don't think it is the motor.

If the pump for the rear washer is pumping, then, where is the fluid going?? Best bet is a leaking or cracked line somewhere between the pump and the nozzle. If the pump is making noise, but not moving any liquid, then it's the pump, (broken impeller). If you can remove the line from the pump w/o destroying anything then blow through it and have someone listen at the nozzle to see if the circuit is complete. I'm not sure how that line is routed to the rear of the car, but if you can blow air through it and there is nothing heard at the nozzle, then it's a sure bet the line is broken somewhere in between. Good luck

BTW, what was the final diagnosis on the other two problems you mentioned??

thanks for the reply !i don't think i explained myself properly.i have taken out the pump and it works fine but when back in the car it does not work also the system is rather odd -the washer used to only squirt when the wiper passed the 12o'clock position ,is there a contact in the wiper motor that controls this?it now also will not park on intermittent wipe but it is okay when on constant wipe!!!is there a relay somewhere that controls the rear wiper? as i said i had exactly the same with a w123 which i solved by selling the car!!!but i cannot afford to do that this time.by the way the '83 230te had done 257,000 when sold and my dad has a'91 230te with over 200,000 showing the 4 pot engines go for ever,
both have only had timing chains replaced.
thanks in anticipation

I have quoted your message text here. When you take the pump out of the car, how you determine that it's working, other than hearing it make a "working noise". If you put it back in, does it still make the same noise? If the pump is cycled by a contact in the wiper motor assembly then that may be the problem. When you are testing the pump out of the car, with the wiper going, does the pump motor cycle on and off when the wiper passes 12 o'clock or is it on constantly? If it cycles with the wiper, then it is controlled either by a relay or a position sensor in the motor assy. If the pump is having difficulty and the wiper park position is off, it's a good bet that something is awry in the wiper motor assy. When it doesn't park correctly in the intermittent mode, where does the blade end up between wipes? Is it in the same place all of the time, or does it wander around the glass? You may need to get a wiring diagram for your car to determine the actual control mechanism for the washer. I have never seen a washer that was slaved to the position of the blade, but what the heck, you never know...Let me know. This is interesting

thanks for your input .i will try to answer your questions1.when pump is out of car i put it across 12v battery it spins and pumps fine ,in car it is dead!
2.it parks randomly.
i think i agree with you that the motor is the problem but iwould still like to know if there is a relay or control box that would be easier/cheaper to change!any ideas as to who/how to find out as haynes manual/not very helpful.
also does anyone know if w123 w124 motors are interchangable?
thanks
hamish

Most intermittent wipers have a timing device or a relay that operates off of a RC control circuit. Try turning on the wiper without the engine running, set it to some delay factor and then see if you can hear a relay clicking anywhere in the car. Then check the fusebox and listen there as well, if you hear a relay cycling then it is most likely something wrong within the motor assy. Look at the diagram for the fuse box, it will generally tell you which fuse/relay controls which circuit. If the pump is working as you describe, then you most certainly have a control problem. Let me know..
