Installing Shocks
 

I purchased 4 Billstein shocks. This week I will have a very good mechanic install them. I have known this man for years and trust him, but he has no Mercedes Benz experience. He usually works on American cars. Is there anything complicated about installing shocks on a 1984 300 SD that a normal American car mechanic could not handle?

Jacob, If he can replace regular shocks, he can replace the bilsteins! No difference what's so ever!

Make sure he has clean hands because he'll have to handle the rear seat parts as he moves them out of the way to get to the rear top shock mounts.

If he's any good, he'll know not to tighten the top mounts so much that he compresses the rubber bushings to the point that the suspension makes noise.

If he's open to suggestions, tell him turning the front wheels all the way over will make access to the bottom bolts a lot easier. I've heard of folks take the front suspension half apart to get to the bolts.

Accordian looking covers on the top half of front shocks aren't always included with new shock kit. Make sure he reuses them if you don't have new ones.

The inside bolts on the front are a bear to get a wrench on. Tip; unbolt the upper mount first then compress the shock and swing it to verticle. Reinstall is the opposite. 12pt 10 mm socket.
