EMERGENCY! Looking for my KNOB ON VACUUM ELEMENT.

I have a 1989 300SEL. I cannot get the fuel door open to put in gas. My OWNERS MANUAL says to "pullback the knob on the vacuum element on the right side of the trunk". I CAN NOT FIND THE KNOB. Do I need to pullback/remove the liner? Is it in my face and I just can't see it?
I don't have enough gas to get to my repair shop for help!
