I just pulled an engine from an early (80) euro 240D manual and put it in my late (84) euro 240D.

Rather than taking transmission (which is a different one on the early model) and all, I just took the engine. It fit onto the late transmission okay. However, there were no dowel alignment holes on the early engine to mate with the alignment dowels in the late transmission. I went to a lot of trouble to align the boltholes as precisely as possible. Even after that, will the transmission and engine be adequately aligned to prevent damage to the input shaft bearing?

The early transmission had no alignment dowels at all.

Thanks for any help that may be offered,

Maybee the dowels were stuck in the tranny or in the engine block.? There should be some sort of alignment dowel as I recall.
