W124 Blue/White headlight bulbs - OK to use?
 

I saw that the local McParts has a blue/white light made by GE for my W124 cars.

Are blue/white bulbs OK to use? Will they over-tax my wiring?

I would make sure the wattage rating matches your current bulbs.

Otherwise the least of your problems would be a blown fuse. Worst would be melted reflectors!

I hate these blue/white bulbs...I bought a pair for $80CAD, and after putting them on, I couldn't see anything...it was especially bad in the rain/bad weather...it was OK when I was in the city, 'cause there were the street lights and other ppl's headlights helping to illuminate the road, but when I got on the highway, I had to slow down to a crawl because I could barely see the road ahead...I got so tired of them I swapped them out for my original bulbs...I also noticed that the light was kind of blinding to oncoming traffic...

If you like to improve your headlight performance without over-tax your wriring, you should take a look at these bulbs: Philips VisionPlus and Osram SilverStar (Euro version, not US). They are the same wattage as standard bulbs, but produce up to 50% more light. These bulbs can be found at: http://www.powerbulbs.com

i have a 93 400 e with less than 50,000 miles i never had any sort of electrical problem with my car what so ever since i got those bulbs they destroyed teh wiring harness (400 + ) to replace it
so i had no choiuce to go back to the original ones...
unless u want to replace it to teh euro jead lights they come with much stronger wattage harness a dn than get whatever u wish
my friend has the euros and he is runninng those powerful bulbs ,,,

USMANDAR, you arent referring to the Vision Plus bulbs are you, as they are the same wattage as OEM, they shouldnt do anything to the housing or wiring. Just more light on the road.

The 9004 headlamp connectors are super weak on my 124. Melted over time with just stock bulbs. The contacts are unusually thin. Also, the wire gauge is thin compared to other cars.

If you really want to use higher wattage lights, you should at least consider a heavier wire harness, switched with relays. Some posters have mentioned that the reflectors will not hold up to the heat, however, others have reported no problems...

Actually, even with the same bulbs, just switching to a heavy harness may result in more light output, since the voltage drop I measured at the lights is fairly steep. Light output drops disproportionately fast as voltage drops. These harnesses run around $50 at various online retailers.

I have not tried this yet on the 124, but have done so on other cars with good results. Still holding out for Euros on the 124... I like running 55/100w H4 bulbs in cars with euro lamps. Does not blind other drivers on low beam. DOT just sucks all around.

HEY AUSTIN 814, NO I M not talking about those OEM wattage bulbs i had those 80/100 ones never even bothered to read the box when its mentioned on it that i might need teh heavier wire harness so now i have OEM wattage xtra lights adn they are just fine
