I have an 83 300D and the instrument lighting is terrible. (I already replaced the rheostat and that didn't help.) I've read previous postings which talk about 5 watt bulbs for the W123 which help but may melt the plastic housing. Anyone have any experience with this? What is the exact specification of the 5 watt bulb and can I get them at an auto parts store?

Instrument lighting on recently purchased 81 300D is dim also with switch "full bright". 'Don't remember my deceased (totaled 4 1/2 yrs ago) 80 240D ever being that dim! 'Haven't investigated the 300D lighting yet.

I usually open up the cluster, take out all the guages and clean the cluster with soap and water to take out the film of dust. You could also take out the celar palstic which transmits the lights to the front of the cluster. TO do this, have a soldering iron ready to melt about 4 plastic pegs. To replace, just glue them back. Worked for me. My 77 300D works better. I also hot wired the rheostat so it would always be on full.

Hope this helps!

Francis
