If I remember right, there were three, maybe 4 screws holding in the passenger side carpeted area. If you are going to pull downwards, do so on the right hand side. (the side by the door)

W126 Passenger Under-Dash Removal
 

Can anyone run throught he procedure to the remove the under-dash in the W126? This is the carpeted section. I've removed the screws that are apparent but find that it's still in there nice and tight. I'm afraid of tugging and pulling too hard for fear of needless damage.

There is one screw (hex head, I believe) hidden on the door side of the knee panel, down low and kinda' inwards. Look carefully for this fourth screw.

Thanks jbaj007, I'll keep an eye out for it. This piece doesn't come off too easy, so I figure there's something to it besides pulling hard. I don't want to break anything in the process, of course.

My 2 cents -- there are 3 screws along the edge just under the glove box door, there's a screw into the right kick panel*, there's a big plastic screw where the panel curves to meet the center console. The plastic screw takes a quarter turn.

The panel should droop when those screws are released. From that point you have to negotiate the release of the ducts and however the forward edge holds on to the firewall.

* this varies by year. Some years don't have a a screw holding the bottom panel to the side panel.

Mine has a screw *behind* the right kick panel. I had to remove the kick panel to get at it. The front edge of the kick panel is held in by two spring clips. I had to apply a lot of leverage to pop the spring clips.

The system is so very neat and tidy it's good to know what to look out for.

I just did it a few days ago. Pull up the floor carpet first, it just unsnaps. Then remove the screw mentioned above, and the three screws on the front of the panel just under the glovebox. Remove the door-side trim next, it pops off. Then open the passenger door and pull down the piece under the glovebox. It moves down and towards the right (out the door) and may take a little jiggling to disconnect it from the vent hoses and so on.

I also removed the glovebox interior when I reinstalled the piece so I could be sure that I reattached the hoses properly.
