towing sl500 cross country
 

I will be towing my car behind my diesel pusher, What is the proper way to tow and should i disconect the speedo cable? I will be driving 8,000 miles in the van and use the car for local trips.

I hate to put a fake 8,000 miles on the sl

put the car on a flat bed.

or lift the rear wheel with the front wheels on another set of towing wheels. This will ensure no fake miles. It is definitely prefered over the just lift back and use front wheels option.

It's not a good idea to tow any automatic with the rear wheels on the ground. Your transmission won't like it at all.

Just a suggestion(based on experience), cover the windshield.
I towed a Subaru, on a dolly, behind a moving van about 1200 miles. The windshield was severly pitted.
Something like a thick plastic drop cloth, should do.

The flatbed is the best idea, or...

Disconnect the driveshaft at the rearend. Sercure the shaft with wire, or remove entirely. Then do as suggested above, get a front wheel dolly.
The odometer does'nt rack up miles unless the thing is in Drive, and I hope you know better that to try to pull in while in gear!

What continent are you traveling across that is 8K miles across? Its only 3.2K from LA to Portland Maine, Or are you taking a very scenic route?

You will destroy the transmission if the REAR wheels are on the ground!!!
