Intermitent starting problem

I have a '96 E300D diesel and am having a starting problem. Sometimes the car will start normally and other times when I try to start the engine, I get no response from the starter. Most times after repeated trying the started will crank the engine. I've checked the starter lockout switch and it's OK. When the starter will not crank all other electrical is OK. I suspect the starter solenoid may be defective. Does anyone know if it is replaceable or Do I have to replace the whole starter. Or is there another part in the chain that may be defective. Unfortunately, no manuals are available for this model. Thank for any help.

The starting problem became more prononced. A various times the glow plug light does not come "ON". When that happens the engine will crank but will not start. I can't locate a wiring diagram for the starting circuit so I don't know the routing from the ignition switch . Can anyone help? This is for a 1996 E300D diesel.

I would suspect the battery(S)

Probably be better off with a reman starter, IMHO

There have been some ignition switch problems associated with that style of switch, so that's a possiblity.
I'd try to rig it up so the next time it fails, you know if youre getting a crank signal (circuit 50) or not, that'd help with the diagnosis alot. Also possibly the shift linkage bushings, you can test by holding the brake pedal and bringing the shifter back to neutral while holding the key to "start".
