3 speed vs 4 speed tranny on 107

Hi all,
I've got it narrowed down to either a 81 500slc or a 79 450slc 5.0. Similar cars, except that the 79 has a three speed tranny. How are these compared to the four speed? are they pretty bulletproof, or is there anything to watch out for? Thanks for any and all replies!
