Here's an unusual suggestion...

On the weekend, I was talking to the better half about your thump, thump and not being able to resolve it. She indicated that she had a similar experience years ago with a 190; thump thump at speed, and no one could find anything. Someone was looking at the car and noticed that a piece of glass weatherstripping had come loose. You guessed it... secure the stripping, no more thump, thump. Hope this helps.

it's in my head....

Welp, this morning I took one of the wheels apart, I pulled of the parking brake shoes springs and line, just on one side for now to eliminate it as the problem, sure enough that was not the problem, because the thumping is still there, tomorrow I will be taking off the other parking brake from the other wheel, I actually should have started with that one, it's a bit rustier and the pads tend to go sideways, but if this was causing the problem, then I sould have noticed the thumping change when I pulled the hand brake, and I did that millions of times. I also checked the shock to see if anything is loose, unfortunately, nothing was....
I once again inspected the entire bottom of the car and once again found nothing.

The good news is that Im nowhere close to giving up on this, I want it gone and one day it will be. Will be ordering new bearings in the next few days, unless I find the problem before that time. Maybe the brakes do hold the solution to this problem...

xp190,

The recommendation on replacing the entire assembly was based on the fact that it could be obtained cheaper than the bearing and the labor to install it. And also the fact that it would reduce your expenses if you find later that you have some other problem that requires the bearing removal (which is destroyed in removal and must be purchased new and then installed once again).

Have you noticed if shifting the load from the front axle to the rear axles or otherwise changes it? Does it depend on temperature or length of driving?

HTH,

I'm not sure, but I think that with the warmer days coming in at last down here, the thumping is a bit milder. I remeber at one point on my way from work I had to really listen in to hear it, but it could be just me, I know that it's still there, and maybe I'm just getting used to it.

I also worked out a plan which might save me a lot of money on replacing the bearings. As work intensive as this operation is, I figured that If I myself get the bearings, and pull off the wheel carrier, I can go to a nearby machien shop and have the bearings replaced for a fraction of what it would cost if the wheel carriers were on the car. Removing them should not be too big a problem, I already looked at the procedure and it does not require any special tools, just some time and patience.

Does that sound resonable to you? It might not be the best way out, but it's one I can afford

Muffler? What if it took a certain amount of speed and thus oscillations of the exhaust system bouncing and hitting against the body?

Spare Tire? Not mounted firmly in the trunk well it bounces up and down.

Flow through ventilation? The low mounted flaps at either side of the lower rear trunk. The material is worn out and flapping.

Fuel filler neck? The rubber collar that separates the fuel filler neck from the body is shot and as the motion of the car increases it starts to whack against the body unrestrained.

Old cell phone antenna wire? The PO had a cell phone installed and it was removed but the wire remains behind a C-pillar and is whacking against the body.

Golf ball? There are golf balls in your trunk bouncing around but it takes at least 40MPH to get them really agitated.

Too much fuel injection cleaner? You have been adding way too much additives (at the urging of unknown forum member) to clean injectors and try and improve a poor idle. The results are a crystalized fuel sending unit float that hammers against the fuel sending unit float tube, but only at speeds above 40MPH.

Partial Matrix? Without knowing it you have backed into the matrix partially and you have invisible ZION workers who are trying to get out of the trunk.

Aliens? You past through a hidden time-portal and there was a momentary inductance shift on the time-spatial relationship with another dimension which altered the relationship of time fabric enough to allow a portion of another being to be trapped in your trunk!

Keep us posted!

I'll let you know what happens after I remove the second set of parking brake shoes and the line so I can drive without the shoes.

A thought came to mine, someone posted in another thread that the engine mounts wearing out lower the engine and tranny. This would impact the dirveshaft somehow since the flex discs would either bend more, or the shaft would be lower, perhaps this is haveing some out of this world result in my alien and zion worker infested car

Have you tried running the car with the rear wheels off the ground in a shop, what happened?

And you've tried the rear tires on the front to make sure there are no isues with them? If your wheels are off it might some grief. Even new rims can be bad. Like my POC ASA's - or so the mechanic tells me. I can see the tread wobble back and forth when I spin the wheel on the car or on the balancer machine.

tires tires tires....

I have two sets of tires md, winter and summer, swapping rotating, nothing made a difference.

Also to update everyone else, I pulled of the ebrake completely, no change... So I guess now I have to go install it again, or leave it off until my new bushings arrive.

Right now i'm gonna go play with the calipers see if I can do anything about them still.

will keep everyone posted.

yea I had to let him go cause he was so loud I couldn't hear the thumping

my dad convinced me to take the car to the dealer, they said $50 - $150 for diagnosis depending on how long it takes to do. Comes out to about the same thing if I were to buy that chassis ear, although that is a useful tool

Car is going in for a check up on tuesday next week. In the mean time I gotta replace the transmission cooling lines, those are coming in today, so I'll be installing them tomorrow, anyone know how difficult this job is? I read it's not that hard at all but some details would help, my manual says nothing about it.
