gears for 124 odometer

I think Imay have a broken gear for the 124's odometer. I already fixed the upper part so I can read mileage now. Problem is with the lower part (the one that can be reset), the "white" wheel (right most) only turns until "3" so I suspect that the small wheel between the upper and lower odometer is busted or something. Where can I get this small gear?

The problem is usually the inner gear. Just take out the rod and put a tick mark where the gear rides. IT'll fix it 9 out of 10 times.

Take out the lower rod? What inner gear? the one between the upper and the lower or the white one? Does the white one have to be fixed to the rod too like the grey one on the tope gear?

Any ideas here? Still can't get the lower odometer to work. The white one is stuck on "3".

I have the same problem, my trip odometer does not work--when i reset it, the most it will go is up to is .9, and then it will just stick on .9, any advice how this could be fixed?....

Hi Benzmac,
I have the same problem, however I do not know what you mean when you say "tick mark". Do you mean scribe, scratch???
This is great, maybe I will learn how to fix MB tripmeters afterall. I have two sets of IP's and am willing to experiment.

If the right-most gear is turning freely, that's your problem. Fixing it is quite simple - I've attached an edited version of an earlier post that should be helpful in this regard. You may wish to review the rest of the thread using the search function.

A broken mechanical VDO odometer is usually the result of trying to reset the odo when the car is moving - this will loosen the right-most gear from the shaft. And it is this gear that drives the whole counter. So lesson one is that when you do get it fixed, reset your odo ONLY when at a stop.
Fortunately, you can easily fix it yourself by re-securing that right-hand wheel - either by scoring the shaft (as Benzmac suggests) or with an anaerobic adhesive. Unlike super glues and most other adhesives this type will not creep through the adjoining air space to the other gears. (You only want to glue the right-most one!)
I prefer the adhesive technique in terms of ease and durability, but be sure to use the appropriate product (Loctite Sleeve Retainer #620 is my choice).
When you do this, or any other job requiring removal of the instrument cluster, be careful not to jam or bend the speedo cable.

Please keep in mind that the "trip counter" is the one that's not working - the one at the bottom that can be reset. Does the right most gear (white) have to be fixed to the spindle too?
