Hella Horn Help - Which Ones?!
 

okay guys, so I am here looking at the newest edition of Performance Products catalog and inside they have 3 different types of hells horns. I don’t particularly like the way my 94 E420 sounds.

the 3 types are:

the hella air horns with the 2 trumpets and compressor

"hella Twin supertone" which are two metal disk type horns

and the "hella trumpet horn" which kind of look like French horns


I kind of like the idea of the air horns, but I am worried about a delay and or longevity/sustainability of the sound. I was thinking maybe the SuperTone disks.

Which horns are the best at stripping the paint off the scum bags that cut me off? :eek:

Why settle for wimpy Hella horns?

I've always wanted to hear the road horn original to the 600. Road & Track in their test of the vehicle when it was new mentioned the horn specifically; it was one of two fitted, selected by a switch. They mentioned that the owner's manual warned the road horn is (approx.quote) not suitable for use in built-up areas. I remember specifically, "It sounds like a rhinoceros in labor, and is the only thing we've ever found that can scare a New York cabdriver."

I had dual semi air horns on the roof of my 77 Argosy Airstream motor Home complete with pull cord . The joke wore off pretty quick , bout lost a friend we were both stuck in traffic jam South of Key Largo he got out of his car and climbed up on my front bumper and made faces at me through winshield ,not thinking how close he was to those ear Drum blasters I pulled the cord, not a whole lot of people thought they were cool.My Euro SE has a switch on the dash that you can switch from your reular horn to a much quieter horn, maybe all SE's and SEl have this never looked? .........

The Hella system has a smaller compressor that spools up fairly fast, so the delay is pretty brief.

I god fed up with trying to command attention with the "beep" "beep" of the stock VW horn, so I installed the Hella kit on the Bug. Now, folks in front of me seriously consider wearing "Depends"! :p

When my VW Rabbit PU horns rusted out, I replaced with W123 horns. Plenty loud now.

I have heard that the 600 horns of the 60's are only replaceable as a swap -- must have the broken part in hand at the dealer to get a new one. They are very special horns for a very special car and MB wants them that way.

I just purchased used BMW 740il horns (2) for my 380sl. They are the Fiamm 410khz and Fiamm 510khz. It will sound 100% better than the anemic sound it makes now. Cost...$15. The German car makers use Hella, Fiamm and another manufacture that I can't recall.

The first upgrade I always made to my motorcycles was to replace the horn, which was the first line of defense before being taken out by those blue hairs driving land yachts.

The circular electric Hellas are'nt much louder than than the OEM disc horns. Air trumpets are the only way to go if you want decibels on your side.

400 & 500 mgz.

very efficient and price ain't too bad.

I have a set of Hella Supertones that I was going to put in the 85 300TD that was totaled. I will now put them in my "new" 85 300TD. Are they a direct replacement, is there an existing relay that I need to replace with the Hella relay or do I need to install a new relay?

Any help would be appreciated.
