Front Seats

Many of the regular readers here will recognize me as having had a ton of issues with my 85 190e. I struggled thorugh all of the issues and have a great car now. I have been driving the car hassle free for a few weeks (4 or 5?). Now I have an issue that sickens me. The seats are worn (as are all 85 seats) and do not support me well (I weight 190). Normally this would be no big deal but I have a BAD back. I need a Lumbar ebhanced seat. Can someone point me in the right direction for a seat for my 190e that will give me the support I need? I hate to say this, but if I cannot find a seat, I will GLADLY sell the car.. even after all I have gone through with it. I love the car dearly, but the incredible pain and numbness in my legs while driving it is enough to make me sell it off. I hope someone has a suggestion. Thanks.

An orthopedic adjustable drivers seat was availabe on the '85 190E with a lumbar adjustment. (It was removed from my '85 and swapped because the car was supposed to go to a MA dealer) The seat was made by Recarco (they made the OEM stock seats too) and looked like the standard seat, not the side bolstered sportline/16V seats.

You can rebuild your seats. The bottom cushion when worn means you sit against a different portion of the seat back which is very irritating. Your back is resting against an area that it wasn't intended to.

I would replace the lower seat springs and padding and see if this doesn't make a difference.

It is a DIYer job. Not too bad really.

I have rebuilt at least five or maybe six seats over my used Mercedes ownership ... all of them get at least a new lower seat bottom cushion. It does make a difference.

BTW, most the Mercedes seats are made by Recaro and are all orthopedic designed.

seat repair

Hi, I have a 1987 300sdl and the lower seats on both the driver and passenger sides are split and the springs roll off the sides and need to be replaced. Where can I get new springs and find the gray leather to recover them? All the motors work fine just the seat is in bad shape.

Thanks, Roger

you can

re cushion the back too.

but the benz seats even after rebuilding leave much to be desired. the only benz that i have owned that really has decent lumbar is my 350sdl with adjustable lumbar.

the best car for lumbar i ever had was a saab.
