I just bought a white 1994 C220. I really
like car, but the performance is lacking (even compared to my '85 190E 2.3)..I can't figure out since the hp is the same. A couple of questions: (1) Does the cooling fan have a clutch? The cooling fan on this car stays on all the time. (2) The car when driven from startup, the first couple of shifts are "delayed" upshifts...even when warm. The manual talks about a brief warmup period, but this is crazy. Normal operation? (3) The climate control reads in Celcuis (c) instead of Farenheight..possible to change? (4)How do I get the alarm system working? It came with car...but it does function according according to the manual directions. Any ideas? Thanks, Chandra Bajpai cbajpai@yahoo.com |

1994 Mercedes has hydraulic 4-speed auto,
For your Qs, 1. I am not sure, but the cooling fan should be on/off automatically. 2. When just startup, the management will help the engine reach its working temp by delayed the shifts. If after couple delayed shifts, and the tranny works normal, then it's nothing to worry about. 3. Do you have the Auto A/C, with LCD or without?? If with LCD, there should be a C/F switch that will change the reading accordingly, if you have manual(dial with temp on it), then...can't help you here... 4. Factory alarm does not have shock sensor and/or glass tempering sensor. To check, roll down driver side window, lock the car with the key from outside, wait for 30 sec, and open the car from INSIDE. the alarm should go off if your car is so equipped. I will leave the first Q to MB Doc, Lee, or any professional thoughts.... Andy Kuo ------------------

Thanks for the quick response.
The transmission bugs me...even if the car is at operating temp, the first couple of shifts are hard (doesn't shift until 3500 RPM). I don't have another C220 to compare this too..my intuition says can't be normal. I have the LCD type of climate control and I'd don't see any C<->F switch at all. I'd love to switch it without taking it back to the dealer. I'll try the alarm test. BTW- I understand this car has a dust filter, any idea how to access it? Thank again, Chandra |

I know it seems obvious, but have you checked the trans fluid level?

The transmission will delay the shifts when first started for a predetermined time period. This vehicle does this cold or hot.Normal.

Upshift delay is for catlyst warm-up, 2-3 shift should happen at 30mph +-2 mph. it is adjustable. Setting it out of range will turn on check engine lamp.

quote: The temp C vrs F can be programmed from the face of the controller. First the version code should be read: Ign on; Press Rest button for greater than 6 seconds, Press the Vent Icon button to set display to 020 - They display will give the version code. A 111 motor with C display will be version 05. You will have to reset to version 06. This can be done from the face with a much more extensive tap dance. If you would email me on Monday I could attach the sequence. ------------------ Steve Brotherton Owner 24 bay BSC Bosch Master, ASE master L1 26 years MB technician |
