Ouch and Help

Well it finally happen, I hit something in the road and it shattered my oil pan. Guys, how much work is this? Is it a DIY? Does anyone know the steps? Just from a quick look I have to remove the swaybar...................

Oops almost forgot 1989 300TE with a lot of miles.

Thanks in advance,

Cardude

Shattered the pan???? Must have been something big to shatter the cast upper pan. Did you get it shut down in time?

If only the lower steel pan you should be able to replace it without much difficulty18 bolts or so. If it is the upper pan, then you might have to raise the engine, or possibly remove the engine to get the upper pan free of the sump or crossmember.

Hey Cardude, sorry about your pan. Replacing it isn't really that big a deal, but it may be tough if it's a driveway job. To remove the oil pan you need to lower it at the front quite a bit. You also need to raise the engine several inches to allow the rear of the pan to clear the frame. On a lift it's easy. I use screw type jacks at the alternator and the A/C compressor brackets to raise the engine. I can lower the front of the pan more than forty five degrees since the car is six feet off the ground. I'm not sure how I'd do it without the aid of a lift. I'm sure it can be done though. Where there's a will there's a way! Good luck
