87 560SEL Window Regulator Nylon Guide In Track

Hi,
Any help would be appreciated. The nylon guide on my 87 560SEL rear right window has broken and I need to put another one in. This is the part that helps raise the window by traveling in a steel rail. The window motor moves an arm that pushes the guide through the rail to make the window move up or down (see pictures) I have it out, door panel out, etc and I am about to buy the new guide. The question I have is this. It seems that I will have to drill out the steel stud in the metal pin that is in the center of the nylon guide - not a bad problem. Then I will have to insert the new steel pin into the arm and then "peen" (hope I got that spelled right) over the pin so it will not fall back out again. This seems like a real problem without taking the whole arm, etc out which seems like way too much work. Is there any after market part that has some sort of screw, rivit, whatever method af attachment so I dont have to "peen" it over or is there a smart method to do it in the door or am I getting it wrong somehow. Any help would be great - thanks! PS the picture of the part is accurate but the picture of the arm, door, etc is not accurate and just to show what I am talking about.

Replace metal pin w/bolt & nut

I had the exact problem when replacing this part in my '83 300SD two years ago. For reference, MB calls this part the "sliding jaw". Open the plastic part and replace the metal pin with a slightly longer bolt. Make sure the head is big enough so it doesn't pull through the hold in the plastic. Install as usual, then put a washer and two nuts on the end of the bolt (second one to prevent the first one from loosening. Make sure the bolt has sufficient clearance so it doesn't hit anything inside the door (the bolt isn't too long), and you're all set!

Hope this helps! This is one of the few cases where I had to come up with a "better" solution than what MB recommended. It never amazes me that these engineers always had ideas that 99% of the time were actually better! (unlike Ford and their "better ideas" that weren't...)

or can take out the regulator

American28,

I have an 87 SDL (same body as yours). I was able to take out the motor / regulator. I think it was three bolts holding it to the door. I had to trace the wires up to the switch. Open the junction box and the wires come out. I had to unbolt one side of the channel that holds the window in place also. The regulator and arm came out then. Drilled out the old stud, put the new one in place. You can setup a spot to carefully mushroom out the head. Carefull not to crack the plastic did that once 8^( . The biggest problem was getting all the door trim back on and aligned right.

Good Luck!
Chuck
