Rebuild kit for '72 280SEL 4.5L
 

I was wondering if I could purchase an engine rebuild kit for a 1972 280SEL 4.5L. If you know of any place that sells them please let me know.

You need to know what you need and everybody sells it.

I am looking for a kit that would have all the gaskets and bearings needed to do a complete overhaul. I would like the kit to be cheaper than buying all the parts seperately

Gasket sets are available. Everything else has to be bought as necessary. Many of the parts are made to repair sizes and the the whole job is a series of individual decisions and repair operations.

The parts that are necessary are greatly determined by whats has happened to the unit and how old it is. I have been working on MB V8s since 1973 (done hundreds of valve jobs). I have yet to see one wear out. I have seen them broken. Unless the motor has sat for years with water in it the only thing wrong with it is probably heads/valves/chain related.

I am looking at this car. The man selling it said that the two cylinders were wet with oil. The mechanic said that it needed piston rings, but he only assumed this. The car has about 250,000 miles.

The car is also fouling those two plugs a lot.

Probably just needs valve guides/seals. Its just a baby.

A compression test will help determine if it is valves or rings.

Run the test, remember to open any valve that restricts air flow to the engine. Next, squirt a couple of shot of oil into the two bad cyls. Then test again. If the compression comes up noticeably then it is your rings that are bad. If the compression doesn't change than it is your valves.

I will try to get that done.
