Squeaking rear wheel !
Im hearing some squeaking when going over speed bumps and such. It seems to be coming from the rear driverside wheel. Where should I try oiling? Should I use white lithium grease?

Could it be one of your brakes locking up? It happened on a friends 733i BMW. It drove fine but always squeaked and ate his rotor to bits.

I would say practically nothing back there is assembled with grease. First find the problem. Lots of things could be loose or worn that can be determined with a close inspection. As mentioned on a recent thread, it does not even have to be part of the chassis mechanics. Lubing the wrong thing could cause more problems than you have now. In particular, wheel bearings will not squeak when you hit a bump.

If the rear control arm bushing (that connects to the carrier) is worn out, then it will start to squeak.
Mine were squeaking and as a temp. fix, I sprayed some lubricant into the joint and it stopped. I have the rear left and right wheel carriers on my 86 300E out currently as I am replacing all the links on the rear and the rear wheel bearings. I found that the control arm bushings on both sides were completely shot when I pulled the carrier out and I have replaced them. The part number for those bushings on FastLane is L2030-40235. (This bushing acts like a ball joint.) Good luck. |
