Headlight Buzzer
Hi everyone.
I have a 1987 190e 16v. It's a grey market that was converted for US use. My dad swears up and down that when he saw the car in Berlin that there was a buzzer that sounded when you left the head lights on. As long as I can remember I do not remember a buzzer but it sounds reasonable (I don't think my dad is senile yet). I took a look under the dash panel by the light switch and the buzzer that is in there now does not look like MB and it is just hanging loose (very un MB like). Does anyone know if there was a buzzer for this car and how to get it back? I have left the lights on twice now and needed a jump. If it did not come with it, does anyone have any ideas on how to get one in there? I can provide pictures if requested. I am driving more two lane country roads and I feel safer with the lights on during the day but I am getting tired of having to jump start it afterward. Thanks for all your help. David |

In many European countries they have inforced laws on headlights at daytime and that started later than your car was produced. Many cars therefore has this buzzer added afterwards, probably what you saw hangin lose.
My 94 has it from new. |

On the W201, the buzzer is built into the seatbelt warning relay, which is behind the LHD driver's footwell panel. You have to remove the hood release lever to remove the panel to gain access. The relay is a small silver box with the buzzer built in.

Come to think of it, I don't think I have a seat belt buzzer either.
I swear if I ever see that SOB who did the "conversion" they will need DNA records to ID him. I'll take a look on Monday and see what I find and report back. |

A possible alternative solution--
On the Saabs I've had, the headlights (but not the parking lights) are wired through the ignition, so you can't leave them on. To the gurus in our group--how complicated would the rewiring to do that be?

I kind of like that idea. Anyone have any idea how to do that? I am handy but I know zip about electronics. If I get instructions, no problem.

I think you would have to change the power source for the head lights from where it is not, to something behind the ignition lock, but that's all I can think of.
btw, my buzzer won't shut up in position 2, I can't listen to my radio cause it refuses to go off, but once the engines starts, or in position 3, it's fine, just I don't want to listen to my radion in position 3 cause all the gauges are on, anyone seen this? xp
