what readings do I want to have when setting potentiometer

I know I have posted on this subject before and I have done all searches on the subject, but they all lead me to dead ends. I know I need an air mass potetiometer, but I want to know exactly what electrical readings I am looking for afer replacing it(ohms, etc.).
I think that when I removed the POT, I may have not put it on EXACTLY like the other one. I made a pencil mark, (not very good move.) So when the new one goes on, then what? What pins should I test for what? Is that all I have to do is line it up like the old one was and then I am good to go? When people talk about adjusting it, are they talking about how it should be placed or is there a seperate screw or something on those lines?
Thanks
David
