Factory Alarm Not working - HELP!
Here is a question for ya.
When I lock my door with the master key and open the door without the key (ie. with window down, I reach in, manually unlock and open the door) the car SHOULD flash its lights and honk a horn...correct? My 1990 300E does this. My 1994 E420 does not. The lights on the 420 do flash but the horn doesn’t honk. I know the horn does work, and actually I took a meter and there was no voltage coming to it. No fuses are burnt out. Any relays in the rear-most compartment that could be involved in this? Where should I start? |

I have the same car.
So it looks like (according to you) that the alarm is working... just no sound. The alarm is seen by removing the front floor mat... BOTH LAYERS. Then unscrew the 1 screw holding the black metal cover. Remove that. The alarm is the black box to the left with 2 plugs on it. Make sure both are in tight and that they have not been cut into. If everything looks ok, check the wiring harness' from the alarm down through the black cover on the right of the floor. See if anything has been cut.

By the way, did you ever change your horns per previous post? What did you finally put in? I hate the sound of this car's horn as well.
Oh yea.. one more thing... is it the actual horns that are used with the alarm? I see another horn looking thing in the hood area. I'll have to check it out. The wiring diagram in ALLDATA refers to an "alarm horn"... hmm....

Jay3000: car is 100% stock, radio and all.
wjm: heh, no I haven’t gotten around to getting the new horns. Anywho, no, the alarm uses a separate disc horn that is behind the drivers-side headlight. it does not use the horns that are behind the grille. I traced the wiring back from the "alarm horn" to the fuse box and couldn’t see much - it being wrapped up and all. I will look into the alarm control box (under the driver’s floor) in a day or so. But yes you are correct, the alarm is working, just without sound. |

You know... now that I think of it.. this should be VERY EASY to resolve.
First pull out the alarm horn and put 12 volts to it. That should tell you if the horn works. The horn has 2 wires... one is brown (ground) and the other is Black w/yellow stripe and red dots. This black wire is wired directly to one of the alarm plugs (ok... maybe it makes a stop at the fusebox... I don't know.. will have to check alldata). Just unplug the correct plug and test for continuity. Also test for continuity between the brown wire and any ground on the vehicle. I just installed a bergwerks keyless entry system in my car. Currently the lights flash when opening and closing. I just purchased another relay in order connect the alarm horn as well. Good luck.

hey WJM, while I got you here, tell me more about your buzzer-to-chime upgrade. The factory benz buzzer is annoying as hell. Where in the dash is the buzzer?

It's in the warning module behind the instrument cluster. I've got pictures that I took and will be posting later this week or early next week. The chime I put in is not load enough, so I had to order a different one... Mallory Sonalert SC616CPN. Should have it in my hands late this week.
It is a HUGE PAIN to take out the entire warning module. So what I do is unplug the harness (plug), then take 2 butter knives (or screwdrivers) and separate the outer casing from the inners and pull the inners out. There is a plastic "nose" on the circuitry that you can grab with a needle nose plyers once you have a butter knife lodged in the top and bottom of the module. Once out, it's just a matter of unsoldering the old buzzer and soldering 2 wires that you will run outside of the module box and connect to the chime. The chime I have has 2 screws to connect the wires to. I then cover them with tape.. insert the circuitry back in and squeeze the chime into the right side of the instrument cluster housing... pushing back enough so that it does not get in the way. Also, to make room for the 2 wires, I notched out a piece of the plastic where the harness connects to. Not sure if that makes sense... but pictures should help.
