Intermittent Fan 88 300E
The blower fan in my 88 300E works intermittently. The other day when I started the car the fan was on and then slowly died out. It's done this a couple of times, sometimes it will come on when you close the passenger door other times it will come on when you start the car. Any clues? Thanks.
I've checked the fuse and it's good i.e. it's intact. |
Does your car have the recall "fuse modification"?
The original setup had a tendency to melt the fusebox insides. |
Might be the ignition switch? Try wiggling the key in the ignition and see if the fan cuts out.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but how could it be the ignition switch? That would be counter-intuitive.
I'm curious because someone I know has a similar problem. |
Hey EasyPhil,
I was just last night reading a 20 step procedure to troubleshoot the climate control system, your problem could be a relay, the climate control switch, a short or 1 or 2 other things, if you have a fax number I could fax the paper to you. Or if not, we can think of some other way...that hopefully doesnt involve alot of typing for me. |
The ign switch provides circuit 15 power to the blower regulator. And if I'm not mistaken, 15 for the main blower fuse as well. There are 2 or 3 circuit 15 outputs on the switch itself and the contact that provides power for the aac and wipers are the most common to wipe out, hence "jigglein'" the key.

I have found that it is hardly ever anything other than either the ignition switch, blower fan resistor or the fan bearings binding.
|
I have the exact same problem. Engine running and blower does not run.
I wiggle the key lightly and presto!!. I just live with it, but open to suggestion on how to fix it. (If cheap) |
You can buy the ignition switch alone.
I think it's about $70 au here. Put it in yourself. |
Thanks for the clarification, guys.
Do all those amps actually pass through the ign switch? Many cars use relays for this. Now I do not need to dig into the wiring diagram... I think you solved my friend's problem too! Wiggling did the trick! |
