I understand the need to de-calcify; is it necessary to de-oil the cooling system in a gas engine MB? Thanks for your time.

Only if it has been oiled Mike,, :D :D..Seriously, if you have gotten some oil in the cooling system, you've got to locate the ingress point (usually bad headgasket), fix that first, drain the cooling system, discard thermostat, refill cooling system with water and a good detergent (Benzmac recommended SHOUT, run it till it's warm, drain it again and flush it with clean water, refill with coolant and be happy..
OOPS, don't forget to put a new thermostat back in...

Jeff - thanks for your reply. Makes sense to me. On another site, I hear alot of talk about "de-oiling"...always figured it related to diesel cars; not gas.

MB makes & sells both degreaser & citric acid powder to clean inside cooling systems. A good dealer should be able to supply it.
Citric acid powder is for bi-annual cooling system flush. Degreaser is for oil in system(ie; headgasket blown).
