560 SEC "clunk"
87 560 SEC does a big "clunk" when I put in reverse. I think it is to loud or to strong. Is this normal? How to fix? Thanks

Check the diff mounts, trans mount and engine mounts first.

Also check the driveshaft flex couplings, particularly the front one.

Yup, done those also. Thanks

Check for "free" motion in the diff -- if you get more than 4" rotation before the gears "catch" by rotating one wheel off the ground, the spider carrier is worn or the pinion crush washer is squashed.
Don't forget to check the vac connection to the modulator, either -- no vac will cause hard shifts, and the tranny gets out of synch going into reverse, so that it's turning forward before the reverse band engages -- bang! Peter |
My 83 500 SEL does the same thing, but only when it is "cold". Does yours do it all the time, or just the first time you put it in reverse?
|
Jeff, mine does it all the time.
