Rick,
It may be three (3) years old but it's the final confirmation for me of the Urban Rumors about the "licht" weight Behr EVAPS. (at one point in the past, I was too close to replacing my radiator [b******ized aluminum core / with plastic tanks and the wonderful benefit of non-recrimpable tabs hold- ing the whole mess together] with an aftermarket copper cored + tanked.) God gave us Aluminum for Aircraft!!!!!! Pressurized fluids: Beer, Antifreeze, Refrigerants deserve either Glass or Copper. These threads are just like any preparation, the more you do , the less chance of a mistake in the execution. Invaluable transfer of knowledge and shared experience! Thanks |

Whenever something like this happens, I always try to point out the dates, so people don't go trying to answer the original poster. For what it's worth, I had a 1993 Eagle Vision that went through an evaporator every year! Blasted aluminum.

It might be 4 years old but it still gives me a soapbox where I can BEG ON MY HANDS AND KNEES for people to NOT use sealants. PLEASE!!!!
These sealants will wreck a recovery machine. It is against the law to service an a/c without having and using a recovery machine. PLEASE have mercy on those who must use recovery machines. They are expensive to replace or repair. The sealants will rarely work effectively anyway, so PLEASE don't use this snake oil. Have a great day, |

It's only going to get worse, I'm afraid. I noticed while at the McParts store last weekend that most of the R-134a on the shelf included sealer with the refrigerant. So lots of folks are installing this stuff in their system, probably without understanding what it is, or what the risks are.

I'm afraid you're right. I have two machines, one for 12 and another for 134. They are both at risk, so I will end up having to fork out money for a sealant detector.
It absolutely AMAZES me when I see people always wanting a quick fix in a bottle. Andy Granatelli must have made millions and millions when STP was popular. Too many people considered it to be an overhaul in a can. I pulled apart a few engines that had this snake oil poured in them when they were worn out in an effort to run them some more. I can't describe the filthy mess inside. You can't get something for nothing, but there are plenty of people that constantly try. Have a great day, |

My 1987 300D sprung a hole in the evaporator. Yes, the car was converted to R134A in 1997 by the previous owner. Although it was *somewhat* tempting to try a quick fix AC sealer, I decided against it.

I just read on another A/C thread where somebody suggested using the leak detecting UV dye. Is that a problem for the recovery machines as well?

The UV dye is not a problem. The problem comes from bootleg refrigerants, meaning anything except 12 or 134 and sealant. I use UV dye all the time.
Hope this helps, |
