I dont know if I even want to ask this because I am afraid of the answer, but here goes.

I have an 83 300D w/ 175k on it. The car runs great BUT I am getting a considerable amount of oil blowing out the air intake housing and ending up with a small mess under the car at the end of the drive. Engine is clean and head gasket not leaking. Valves?

AT 175K MILES TOU WOULD EXPECT BLOW-BY,HOWEVER YOUR SYSTEM SHOULD KEEP THINGS IN CHECK. MAKE SURE THE MANIFOLD GASKET IS GOOD AND BOLTS ARE TIGHT.MAKE SURE THE NIPPLE ON BOTTOM OF AIR CLEANER IS IN DRAIN TUBE BACK TO PAN. M.F.

There is a return tube for this oil to go back into the oil pan. There is an o-ring on the tube and on occaision it will crack...Also be sure that the canister inside the air filter housing is tight.

There is a modification that can be done to the valve cover to reduce the amount of oil that is blown into the air cleaner. Remove the valve cover. Look inside it where the front edge of the oil separator plate meets the aluminum casting of the valve cover just below the connection for the breather tube. If there is a gap there, the modification hasn't been done. If there is a band of gray epoxy, its been done already. I've used NAPA(Lock-tite)5-minute epoxy for this repair for 15 years with no failures. The epoxy comes in small single-use flat circular containers. Fill the gap with 5-minute epoxy(do not use any other sealant).
If the oil is hitting the ground, you do need to check the oil return tube from the air cleaner for leaks(as previously mentioned).
