Spoke to my Tech today, he advised me that with the hot,hot Houston Texas summers,I should not use R134a in my A/C system.. He advised me to use R12... I can live with that, I read a lot of postings on this wonderful site advising the samething... My Tech showed me a can of the Freon he is going to shoot. The label read "FREEZE 12"
a replacement for R12...Have any of you fellows ever heard of this stuff ????
Could it be the same old R134a stuff under a different label ????

Thank you, Juan

Warning !!!!! Freeze 12 is not R12. It costs about $10 a pound verses $35 a pound for R-12. Many shops will not invest in the R-12 because of its cost. This Freeze 12 is a 134 bases freon...Do not trust this tech, he is either crooked or misinformed, both are dangerous.

If Tech charges the system with FREEZE-12, it should be labeled accordingly. Next time, when the A/C system needs service, the only shop that can service the system legally is the one with the setup for FREEZE-12. How many Freeze-12 shops you can find in your area?

juan,

I would like to add something here. I understand that the R12 replacements, which I assume this is, are explosive.

You would think that being explosive inside your air conditioner would not be a big deal, and maybe it isn't. But what if a compressor locked up and made a spark?

juan, I live in Texas myself and know how frustrating it is to deal with this R12 problem. I also know how brutal the heat can be, but I think you need to either "bite the bullet" and go for R12 or convert to R134.

I hate to get political, but I believe that our congressmen should have had to live in Houston, Texas in August with no air conditioning for about a month before voting on the bill that outlawed R12.

Good luck juan,

If the problem is $$, next time you go to Laredo TX or any other border, just cross the line and get some cans of the R12 for $9 bucks, or if you don't want the risk of getting cut, just have your car charge down there....YEEAH!
