I have a 91 300D and just went to the MBZ dealer and purchased an oil filter kit#A601-180-01-09). In this package there is a filter, large "O" ring and two small copper washers. My question is with the two copper washers, I know the larger one is for the drain plug, but what is the smaller copper washer for??
Thanks,
ARI

arosen,

The other copper washer is for a different model that uses the same filter, but a different size drain plug.

I wish I had about 10% of the value of every gasket, washer and other small part included in items like this and especially carburetor kits that has been thrown away since the beginning of the automobile. I'd have a huge barn full of Mercedes Benz automobiles and tons of money left over.

I think it's safe to say that it is more economical and profitable for parts manufacturers to put several extra small parts in a box and decrease their number of different part numbers they must keep on the shelf.

Changing oil I can do, If its the same as the 1987 Diesel. Large copper O ring is for drain plug and small copper O ring is for center filter post. When you remove oil filter center post from cover there is a copper washer between the head of the center post and the cover. Some people manage to remove the filter by leaving the center post in place hence you may not see the 2 copper O ring.

he 87 300D is a 3.0 6 cylinder and mine is a 2.5 5 cylinder. I think the extra copper washer in yours amy be for a different application, although it seems strange for the washer to be where you state it is. Generally copper washers are used to seal two metal surfaces. The center shafter in the filter assembly is sealed with the rubber washer that is bulit into the new oil filter, at leat on the 2.5 diesel.
